Frequently Asked Questions
Do you offer direct billing to FSCD?
Yes, we offer direct billing to FSCD for eligible families. This means families with approved FSCD funding may be able to have respite care billed directly, instead of paying the full amount upfront and waiting for reimbursement.
Our current respite care rate is $30 per hour. Since every FSCD agreement is different, families should confirm with their FSCD caseworker that respite care services are covered under their funding agreement and that direct billing is approved.
Once confirmed, Respite Edmonton can help families understand the next steps needed to set up FSCD direct billing for respite care.

If your family lives near Edmonton but outside these listed areas, you can still contact us to ask whether support may be available in your community.
Yes. If you have another child and would like care for them at the same time, we can offer private sibling care with a minimum booking of 3 hours.
Sibling care can be helpful for families who want support for more than one child during the same respite session. This allows parents and caregivers to take a break, attend appointments, run errands, or focus on other responsibilities while knowing their children are supported.
No, Respite Edmonton does not currently operate as a facility-based respite centre. Our services are offered through in-home respite care and community-based respite support.
This means care can take place in your home or in approved community settings, depending on your child’s needs and your family’s preferences. Community support may include safe outings, recreational activities, libraries, indoor play spaces, or other appropriate locations agreed upon by the family and care provider.
Finding the right respite care support can make a big difference for families caring for children and youth with complex needs. At Respite Edmonton, we provide compassionate respite care for children and youth ages 3 to 18, including level 1 and level 2 support needs, in Edmonton and surrounding communities.
Our FAQ below answers common questions about respite care pricing, FSCD billing, sibling care, service areas, availability, and where care can take place.
Respite care can take place in the family’s home or in the community. Many families prefer in-home respite because the child can remain in a familiar, comfortable environment.
Community-based respite may also be available for children and youth who benefit from safe outings, social interaction, or structured activities outside the home. The location of care depends on your child’s needs, the family’s comfort level, and the agreed care plan.

What is respite care?
Why do families use respite care?
Respite care is temporary support that gives parents and caregivers a break from caregiving responsibilities. For families caring for children with disabilities, complex behavioural needs, or developmental needs, respite care can provide much-needed relief while ensuring the child is cared for in a safe and supportive way.
Respite care may be used for rest, errands, appointments, work, family time, or simply to help caregivers recharge.
Families use respite care for many reasons. Some parents need time to rest, attend appointments, work, or support other family members. Others use respite care to help prevent caregiver burnout and create more balance at home.
Respite care can also give children and youth the opportunity to build relationships with trusted support workers, participate in activities, and receive one-on-one attention.
